For more than 120 years, the Alberta Medical Association has been the official representative for Alberta’s physicians, residents and medical students. With more than 15,000 members – representing about 98% of Alberta’s practicing physicians – the AMA speaks with a strong, united voice for the profession.

Your AMA membership is essential to maintaining this strength – and it delivers real value back to you.

Over the past year, AMA has helped deliver tangible benefits and professional support

1) Physician compensation and practice stability

  • Primary Care Physician Compensation Model (PCPCM): Jointly developed with Primary & Preventative Health Services (formerly known as Alberta Health). Nearly half of eligible family physicians and rural generalists have enrolled, with estimated income increases of 25%.
  • Alternative Relationship Plans (ARPs) & after-hours incentives: New ARP rates for family medicine took effect January 1, 2025, including recognition of after-hours time provided in facilities – aimed at stabilizing practices, improving access and aligning compensation with fee-for-service benchmarks. The AMA is currently advocating to implement new specialist rates recommended by the ARP Working Group.
  • Cancer Care Agreement: Four-year agreement reached post-arbitration; 11% increase in year one (retroactive to April 1, 2024), with a 20.1% compounded increase over the agreement term.
  • Market Rate Review: AMA and sections put forward undervalued fee codes. AMA worked with sections to ensure mediation/arbitration assessment of government proposals/comparisons were “apples-to-apples,” considering potential impacts to service delivery and patient care. Estimated impact to the Physician Services Budget: an overall $19.2M increase. Diagnostic Imaging code assessments are occurring separately, with AMA providing analytical support.
  • Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) agreement: Negotiated by AMA and ratified with strong support (94% of voting physicians). This five-year agreement recognizes the unique nature of WCB-related work and reflects the shared commitment of both parties to support care for WCB patients.
  • Rural Remote Northern Program (RRNP) retroactive payments: Issued under the AMA Agreement, for the period April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, supporting rural practice.
  • Lab agreement: AMA advocacy efforts resolved retroactive payment issues with Alberta Precision Labs.
  • Income Equity Measure: Adopted for preferential allocation to sections, guiding AMA policy and future allocations as part of the Physician Compensation Strategy.
  • Updated the Uninsured Services Guide: Refreshed with two companion resources – aimed at improving understanding of services not covered under the AHCIP.
  • Continued to support CII/CPAR adoption: Currently, 3.5 million patients are on a CPAR panel, 1,087 clinics are live and up to 50,000 panel conflicts – cases where two physicians have the same patient attached, creating continuity and referral challenges – are being resolved every month. As of December 2025, $9.1 million of the $12 million Acceleration Grant has been paid to physicians. The grant ends March 31, 2026.

2) Leadership, advocacy and equity

  • Organizational modernization: Realigned AMA organizational structure and governance to meet system demands.
  • Establishment of Section of Indigenous Health: The first of its kind among Canadian medical associations, supporting reconciliation and culturally safe care.
  • Public health leadership: AMA filled critical gaps in Alberta’s public health response – advocating for vaccine access, countering health misinformation, and championing patient autonomy and informed decision-making.
  • International recognition: AMA’s Accelerating Change Transformation Team (ACTT) shared Alberta’s success story at the 2025 Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Forum. The presentation highlighted AMA-led primary care compensation reform and access improvements achieved through evidence-based change management, physician co-design and data-driven insights.
  • Informed Reform and PatientsFirst.ca: More than one in three Albertans so far have seen the AMA’s advertising campaign, advocating for the voice of the profession and the use of evidence in health care decision making. Our relationship with the public continues also through the PatientsFirst.ca community, 66,000 Albertans now engage with the AMA, participating in surveys to inform advocacy, and writing letters to MLAs on various issues that matter to them.

These achievements demonstrate the power of a united physician voice. But AMA membership is more than advocacy – it’s about supporting you throughout your career.
