Alexander H.G. Paterson

Alexander Paterson is a Medical Oncologist in the Department of Medicine at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, and a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Oncology, University of Calgary. He is former Head, Department of Medicine, Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Division of Medical and Radiation Oncology, University of Calgary.  

Dr. Paterson qualified in Medicine at Edinburgh University and trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Royal Marsden, London. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and London and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee (Oncology Therapies) for the Therapeutic Product Directorate, Health Canada and has been Deputy Chair of the Out-of-Country Health Services (Alberta) Appeal Panel.

Dr. Paterson is a member of the Board of Directors of the NSABP, a member of the Breast Cancer Working Group of the National Research group (NRG) and the EBCCTG (Oxford) Meta-analysis Working Group, Chair of NSABP B-34 and a P.I. of SWOG 0307. He continues as an investigator in clinical research projects with N.R.G. (USA). He has published over 100 articles, authored over 15 book chapters, written several books and contributes a regular medical/political column to Alberta Doctors’ Digest. He has given over 200 invited lectures. 

Dr. Paterson continues to volunteer in Global Health projects and teaching in Zamboanga City (Southern Philippines) and U.N.A.N. (Managua, Nicaragua).
